What is APEGS Competency Assessment?


Competency is described as the use of specific information, skills, and practices in the performance of specific assigned tasks. Competencies are often used as the foundation for competence requirements, which define the level of experience, skills, and abilities needed for workplace performance as well as possible assessment criteria. Competency Assessment:

Any method that is used to analyze the measurable activities that good performers possess when working on any given job is referred to as a competency-based assessment. These activities are the product of an employee’s different talents, experiences, motivations, traits, and skills. Competency-based assessments should be based on specific work criteria and deliver consistent and reliable outcomes. As a result, competency-based tests can be used to predict overall work performance.

Competency Assessment Categories:

Important things you should check before applying:

  1. Make sure your résumé/curriculum vitae (CV) is up to date and includes main job positions, tasks, and accomplishments over the time of work experience you’re claiming (at least four years). This saves your time when it comes to filling out the Employment History form and choosing tasks.
  2. Make sure you keep track of all your CPD targets and projects.

Via the Engineering Competency Assessment System, all applicants must complete an Employment History summary. The Employment History section provides a chronological, short-form summary of an applicant’s work history, as well as some additional information about duties in each role. Before submitting their final Competency Self-Assessment, an applicant may edit the description at any time.

The following is the format for entries in the Employment History section:

  • When you pick “add job history” for each object and fill in the appropriate details. Each object must be classified as “job experience,” “other/non-engineering,” or “thesis.” Only a thesis-based Masters’s (M.Sc.) is qualified to count against the four years of experience necessary, not a course-based Masters’s (M.Eng.).
  • Provide a brief overview of the major projects on which you worked in each position in the “Overview of Major Responsibilities and Projects” section, including a summary of your job and the project scope.
  • The use of point type is allowed.
  • A minimum of four years of experience is required.

Stages of submitting an application:


  • When you are qualified to use the Engineering Competency Assessment System and are in one of the following situations, you can build an account:
  • You have been accepted as an engineer-in-training by APEGS, or you are an engineer-in-training applicant who is a foreign graduate who has been granted the opportunity to apply for your application.
  • Once you’ve completed the steps to create an account, APEGS will be notified automatically to approve your account, and you’ll be notified by email when it’s time to start entering your details.


  • You can log back into the Engineering Competency Assessment System at any time to monitor the progress of your Validators in checking your application after you’ve submitted your Competency Self-Assessment via the system.   • You should apply for professional membership after you’ve received notification that your competency examination has been passed and you’ve also taken the Professional Practice Exam (which you should have passed).

The Interim Submission:
