Avoid using ambiguous words when describing your experience applying theory, such as “manage,” “review,” or “direct.”

Acceptable Engineering Experience

Satisfactory engineering experience is that which complements your academic engineering training and builds on the knowledge that you gained in university. Activities must involve: engineering design; design review/modifications; or problem solving that requires engineering analysis. This experience should also provide for the development of responsibility, judgment, communication skills and self-confidence.

The following are the five elements of satisfactory engineering experience for licensure purposes. A substantial exposure to the first two, “Application of Theory” and “Practical Experience” is mandatory while a reasonable exposure to the remaining elements is sufficient.  A complete lack of exposure to any one of these areas may render the applicant unsuitable for licensure.

  • Application of theory – analysis, design, synthesis, devising testing methods, implementation methods.
  • Practical experience – function of components as part of a larger system, limitations of practical engineering, significance of time in the engineering process, knowledge and understanding of codes, standards, regulations and laws.
  • Management of engineering – planning, scheduling, budgeting, supervision, project control, risk assessment.
  • Communication skills – written work, oral presentations, and presentations to the general public.
  • Social implications of engineering – determining the value or benefits of the engineering work to the public, putting appropriate safeguards in place, relationship between the engineering activity and the public, role of regulatory agencies

All of the above noted factors are taken into account when assessing the final Experience Record and the application for licensure. The simple passage of time is not sufficient; the quality of the experience is very important.

PEO Experience Record – How to Create Your Experience Record

To assist with the PEO review and help you ensure that your Experience Record provides adequate information it is suggested that your Record be organized as follows:

  • Complete the Experience Record Form (including the company name, location and the employment dates (month and year).  Periods of absence from employment (traveling, unemployed) should also be listed with dates; and
  • For each position about which you are reporting give us a small paragraph describing your job responsibilities with an emphasis on the engineering duties; and
  • Describe how the work experience obtained in that position meets each of the five criteria (application of theory, practical experience, management of engineering, communication skills and knowledge of the social implications of engineering).

When describing your engineering activities:

  • Focus on what you did as it relates to each of the five engineering criteria. Structure the description to include not only WHAT you did, but HOW you did it and WHY you did it. You may use the format: “I did…using …in order to…”
  • Be specific about what you did as opposed to the work of the team. “I determined the heat load….”
  • Provide sufficient information about the complexity of the situation.

Pregraduation Experience

There are valuable experience linked with the PEO when assessing the required four years of the experience related to satisfactory engineering practices. You could be credited with the experience of 12 months when you have postgraduate engineering degree in the same or other equivalent discipline as the undergraduate degree.

Please note that:

  • Pregraduation engineering experience linked with gaining the bachelor’s degree mid point which is eligible for the assessment. i
  • a maximum of 12 months is eligible for assessment; and
  • pregraduation experience cannot be credited in lieu of the required minimum 12 months of Canadian experience.

P.Eng. Application Process

P.Eng. for Professional Engineers Ontario application process is split into four sequential stages. These included fulfilling the academic requirement, passing the National Professional Practice Exam, satisfying the requirement related to experience, and then attaining the license review and approval.

The applicant will be assigned deadlines for meeting the requirements from PEO during the application process and submit the additional information as needed. When the deadlines are not met, the application could result in closure. When the P.Eng. application is closed, their EIT membership will be terminated when the applicant is registered in the Engineering Intern (EIT) Program.

Academic requirements: CEAB vs non-CEAB program graduates

The application process of P.Eng. is obtained from whether the applicant is able to meet the academic requirement from PEO. Applicants should hold the bachelor’s degree in the domain of engineering from Canadian university program specifically accredited from the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board.

Applicants particularly holding the engineering bachelor’s degree from the program which is not a CEAB-accredited engineering program will have their academics specifically assessed from the Canadian Engineering Qualification Board criteria for determination of whether the applicant meets the PEO’s academic requirement. PEO Experience Record – Criteria for Acceptable Engineering Experience

A major component is the experience in the formation of an engineering graduate on his or her way for achieving the licensing as the Professional Engineer. Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)

All applicants are required to obtain a minimum of 48 months of acceptable, verifiable post-bachelor’s engineering experience of which at least 12 months must be in a Canadian jurisdiction under the supervision of a licensed Canadian professional engineer.

Professional Engineers Ontario assesses engineering experience which is against five, quality-dependent steps. These included application of theory, practical experience, engineering management, communication skills, and engineering social implications awareness.

For the experience assessment, applicants will be required to submit their experience summary page, referee list, and experience record(s). If additional information is required, PEO will contact the applicant directly.

During the experience assessment, applicants may be referred to the Experience Requirements Committee (ERC) for an assessment. This ERC interview assesses the applicant’s competency to practice through demonstration of the five criteria.

PEO Experience Record – Experience Length

It is needed to demonstrate at least four years of verifiable acceptable engineering experience as an applicant for licensure to obtain the valid license. Further, the applicants require to achieve at least one yer of the Canadian experience in the Canadian jurisdiction, under the professional engineer direction, who is specifically licensed in Canada.

PEO Experience Record – References

You are required to provide three references at least and with one about the P.Eng that will be providing person details who has specifically supervised you for about 12 months in the jurisdiction of Canada. The references are required to be work reflective that you have done and ideally relying on the licensed professional engineers who have particularly acted as the direct supervisors. There should be one reference from HR Director or any other Director from the company of which you have worked. Your references Your references should be such that along with attesting your technical abilities and abiding by the 5 abovementioned criteria, they should also act as verification of your good character.

PEO is offering the provisional license to those interested in getting the P.Eng., and fulfilling their Canadian experience requirements of 12 months. PEO Experience Record Ontario – Reinstatement:
